ChatGPT Now Works in Your Car Through Apple CarPlay
ChatGPT is now available on Apple CarPlay, letting drivers have hands-free AI voice conversations directly from their car screen.

OpenAI has launched a dedicated CarPlay version of ChatGPT, bringing its popular voice mode to car screens for the first time. The feature works on iPhones running iOS 26.4 or later with the latest ChatGPT app installed. It is available to all users, including those on the free plan.
The experience is fully voice-based. Drivers tap to open ChatGPT on their CarPlay screen, start a new voice chat, and simply speak. ChatGPT listens and responds out loud, with no typing needed. Users can also continue recent conversations or pick up a chat from an ongoing project.
There is a setting in the ChatGPT app that lets the voice mode start automatically every time CarPlay is connected, skipping straight to listening without any extra taps.
The feature does not show text on the car screen and cannot control car functions like navigation or music. It also cannot access the driver's location. For those tasks, Siri remains the tool to use.
OpenAI notes that this is Apple's first time opening CarPlay to third-party AI voice apps, and ChatGPT is the first to launch. Other AI assistants are expected to follow in the coming months.
OpenAI advises users to set up the app before driving and to rely on voice controls only while the vehicle is moving.
