OpenAI Makes GPT-5.6 Luna 80 Percent Cheaper for Users

OpenAI has cut prices across its GPT-5.6 model family and added a faster option for its top model. The change means developers and businesses using these AI models will pay much less for the same work, while also getting the choice of quicker responses if needed.

The biggest cut is for GPT-5.6 Luna, the fastest and cheapest model in the lineup, which now costs 80 percent less than before. GPT-5.6 Terra, the mid-range model built for everyday tasks, gets a 20 percent price cut. The flagship model, GPT-5.6 Sol, keeps its current price but now offers a "fast mode" that responds up to 2.5 times quicker, though it costs twice as much as the standard speed.

OpenAI said it is committed to pushing the model frontier across cost efficiency, capability, and speed, and that the new lower prices for Luna and Terra will also apply to usage inside Codex and ChatGPT Work, meaning existing subscribers get more out of their plans without paying extra. The company also said its automatic code review feature has been upgraded to run on GPT-5.6 Luna instead of an older model, and combined with the new pricing, this task is now expected to cost about ten times less.

OpenAI credited GPT-5.6 Sol itself for making some of these savings possible, saying the model was used to improve its own production systems after launch. This included faster processing methods and lower running costs behind the scenes, which the company is now passing on to users through cheaper pricing.

The update comes as AI companies compete heavily on offering strong performance at lower cost, with businesses increasingly choosing tools based on value rather than raw power alone.
